Vannamei culture refers to the farming of Litopenaeus vannamei, commonly known as Pacific white shrimp or Vannamei shrimp. It is one of the most widely farmed shrimp species in the world due to its high survival rate, fast growth, and adaptability to various environmental conditions. Habitat and Farming Conditions

  • Extensive Farming: Low-density farming in natural or semi-natural water bodies with minimal intervention.
  • Semi-Intensive Farming: Controlled stocking density with moderate feed and aeration management.
  • Intensive Farming: High-density culture with advanced biosecurity measures, controlled water quality, and high aeration systems.

In modern aquaculture, biofloc technology is also being used, where beneficial microbes improve water quality and enhance shrimp nutrition. This method reduces the need for frequent water exchange and improves sustainability.

Feeding and Growth

Vannamei shrimp are omnivorous and feed on algae, plankton, and formulated pellet feeds. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) is typically around 1.2-1.5, meaning they efficiently convert feed into body mass. Under ideal conditions, shrimp can reach 20-25 grams in 3-4 months.

Disease Management

Common diseases affecting Vannamei shrimp include White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS), and Vibriosis. Proper biosecurity measures, water quality management, and the use of pathogen-free post-larvae (PL) can significantly reduce disease outbreaks.
